The news of the Pollock- Krasner foundation fellowship grant was covered widely by the national dailies. This resulted in drawing the attention of the cultural department of the state and other bodies. The planning board member of the Kerala State and CMP State Secretary Mr. C.P John visited me and asked to explore the possibilities of creative portrait. A widely travelled person and a frequent visitor to most of the world class museums and art galleries , Mr. C.P. John suggested two books to me , The Amphidextrous Universe by Martine Gardner and The Cosmic Serpent DNA Jeremy Narby as must reads. Again he persuaded to think about the potential of Creative portraits. Respecting his interest in the subject I did the creative portrait of Mr. C.P.John which featured in the background Mr. C.P. John’s birthplace, the two books that he suggested , and the infiniteness of the cosmos . The work done in Indian Ink belongs to the genre of drawing. It took a month to finish it.
The history of wood industry in Kerala a century ago is the theme of this commissioned work. Then prevalent dress codes, vendor streets, architecture and the elements of foreign trade the local kings had with the East India Company- all have become a part of the work. The work includes five major drawings in Indian ink as medium on canvas, of which 4 pictures are of 20”x20” size and one picture is of 20”x36” size. Completed the work on 30 September 2016 which was started on 1st June 2016. The work was done for Sunrise Furniture, a famous brand in furniture industry.
An Exhibition of Drawings by Pushpakaran Kadappath Curated by John Davy , art - space Academy , Sun Tower , East Fort , Thrissur . The large drawing was completed in February 2016 . After extensive discussion it was decided that the Baroda based artist Mr. K.K. Muhammad should open the show and the show should be curated by the noted painter and sculptor Mr. John Davy . The exhibition titled An Untold Story by Granma was decided to the loving memory of my grandmother . My solo exhibition was the opening show of the gallery . My teachers and friends made the day vibrant with their talks and observations on my works .The logo release of Mail art Triannale 2019 also took place on the same day . Though the exhibition was to end within one months it had to be extended considering the request of the art loving public from both within and outside the state . There was also a slide show of the paintings of the well known painter Mr . T.M Aziz . Though there was not much sale in the exhibition it resulted in receiving some commissioned works . There were also enquiries from reputed auction establishments like Saffron art New York .I have also received offers for Exhibitions from the reputed galleries in my country .
It was for ‘Suryas Marine L.P.G Kit Company’, a company at Sreemoolanagaram near Kalady (Ernakulam), I undertook this project in 2006. It was then my first and big project after I completed my B.F.A course (Bachelor of Fine Arts). The company’s Managing Director, Mr. Abu Maraykkar was of the view that the design should be something fundamentally different from that of the currently running ones. I prepared a design which merged both Kerala’s architectural model and European architecture. The M. D. also was interested in a design that resembles a bulb which carry the model of pools seen in ‘Naalukettu’(A quadrangular building model with inner courtyard, prominent one in the traditional Kerala architectural style). Models of stepping stones and the faces of a fabulous animal seen in Kerala temples also were supplements in the design. The laterite pillars, of at least 15 feet long, were placed on each side of the stepping stones. The one I brought to this work was the architectural model of Sphinx in Vienna. The sculpture made in cement is about 6 feet long. Pedestal which is of European style was designed for the sculpture. The compound wall which is in semicircular fort like model, adjacent to the pedestal is what I consider to be most attractive part of the design. The sculpture of Sphinx was placed facing the pool. The peculiarity of the design is that the laterite stones (Red Sand Stone) seen in Kerala is used in the construction of the design. The designs made of laterite stones are so beautiful in Kerala architecture.
As part of the exhibition an installation was set up using small drawings and this attracted the attention of many of the visitors of the gallery. Around twenty drawings of 7x7, along with 250 English letters cut in wood ( CNC Machine design, MC Wire Net) were used to present lines from Pablo Neruda’s poetry. The installation presents some letters lying on the floor to create a feeling of incompleteness to the lines presented. Titled Memoirs which have fallen apart the installation talks of the memories of childhood and journeys. The English letters that are part of installation are cut from wood of a tree variously called devil- tree , and milk- wood pine found in the Indian subcontinent The tree was selected for its unique white color . The installation was totally different experience for me.
